I agree with rent here, it just seems backwards to me to ask a group of people to leave. The way it is phrased in the wiki and stickies is Chat is the place for meaningful conversations and barrens is the place you go for zero-cal, no content, fluff fun. Which is why a lot of people don't turn on the channel on.
If there is a feeling that this should be changed, then it needs to be. It gets really irritating when you are having a serious discussion about lore/life/character development and are asked to move to barrens, where people are gnome punting and prancing around in drag. What is more annoying is the arguments that are cropping up every few days.
Obviously there is a problem, so we need to either change the rules or change how they are enforced. A poll might be useful, or the rules just being changed and the GM's laying down the law.

All I want to say, is that I hear a lot of people in here using opinions, and treating them as if they are facts. In your opinion, it's more polite for the people to leave. In my opinion, it's more polite for the people asked to take the conversation elsewhere, to do so.

I think this is another example of a topic that will go on forever, honestly, because it's based upon opinion, not solid fact.

I don't see what the big problem is, when there is a 'serious' topic in chat there isn't that much commotion in Barrens because they are absorbed into the Chat topic, so when it is asked to move it's not like it's walking into a circus tent or anything when it is taken to the Barrens.

I agree with you Andrasia, I would take it to Barrens. But sometimes when we take serious and perfectly acceptable conversations to barrens. -We- get flooed with 'lmao chuck norris waz hurr 2dai nd he pwned u az ff u r 2 nomes that r punted kthxbai'. It gets a bit silly.

Perhaps, if people don't want to go to Barrens because it's too random, there could be a Lore channel. So instead of punting a conversation about characters or lore or whatever to Barrens, where it may get sidetracked, a lengthy conversation could move to the Lore channel, where it would be easy to continue without any distractions.

I know I'm not really very active anymore, but from what I remember when I was, I can kind of relate (although I did put some random stuff in Chat. :[)... I think it's polite for people to change channels if asked to, but is it polite for the person to ask them to move in the first place if it is a perfectly acceptable topic? That's what I think... It might be "polite" to move, but is it in fact "polite" to ask sometimes. ._. Ohhh well.

There´s nothing keeping players from making and using their own channels if they have a topic they´d like to discuss something, I´m pretty sure we GMs won´t create any new "official" ones since we already have a bunch.

On the big whole I agree with what Rensin and Andrasia said, make sure to be civil and don´t take this too seriously, moving channels aren´t that big of a deal and doesn´t demand too much energy to do.

Besides, if someone asks you to be a bit more quiet on a public forum, wouldn´t the polite thing to do be to do as the guy asked? (Unless he´s screams at you, then you bring out the boom-voice).

I'm going to go ahead and create a Lore channel then, name is Lore. That way If I feel like discussing stuff I can do it there.
