Sorry to double post, but... this simply HAS to be posted. SPOILERED FOR SIZE. And this is all one word.

Two chemical terms (3,641 and 1,913 letters long) have appeared in the Guinness Book of World Records. They were withdrawn because they have never been used by chemists, and there is no theoretical limit to the length of possible legitimate chemical terms. A DNA molecule could have a name of over 1,000,000,000 letters if it was written out in full.

One of the only times I got detention in high school was due to use of the word crapulous in an essay I wrote for my English class. My teacher first claimed that I had cursed and then (after I'd broken out the dictionary) claimed that I had intentionally used the word in order to provoke a reaction -- and, apparently, make her look dumb.

I was not pleased.

Edit: Not to mention the teacher's reaction when I wrote a term paper titled "The Black Man's Bible" when examining themes involving religion, sin, evil, and the Devil in The Scarlet Letter. Never-you-mind that there is a Bible-toting character in the novel referred to only as the Black Man.
