It might be a good idea, though I think you only need to patch up to 3.0.3. Having WotLK will let you go to Northrend and do those nice things, though. This thread has download information that should work.

Depends on your account type, it think the Admins can change your account type. But till that it will require WotLK to play. There are some downloads for it on the forums.
