Server set up problems

Ok so I'm new and I've read the connecting to the server post
so I renamed my wow retail realm list to realmlistLIVE.wtf

and right clicked the link provided
saved target as...
put it in the esUS folder or something
deleted the cache file
and tried logging in to wow

I was able to log in fine (with my battle.net account? is this where i messed up?)

but when I was connected the realm list I got was the retail realm list


am I missing something?
or am I just a noob at private servers?

I am a noob at private servers, logged in to the wrong account...

anyone Ima go hide in a shame corner...
