I don't suggest having a large two handed sword on your back, but there are a lot of weapons that definitely works with a back scabbard without being clunky. In fact, for longer daggers and short swords, the back is an exceptional sheathing location, since you can draw into a diagonal downwards facing strike. Although that would be more of a shoulder sheath, wouldn't it?

I know this post is some..two years late, but in reality anyone trained to draw a blade could do it from the hip or the back because thats how they would be trained to do it.
