I think adding in some family history, when the family ascended to nobility, what the status of the clan is, that sort of stuff would make for a good thane tale... Though let me digress and assert that if you're not really into a race you really shouldn't assume a role such as noble or thane.
I like politics and think it would help -me- personally get into the races from the start :P
Read up some lore on Dwarves, and start off with a simple character, and build onto said character by reading lore, and your own twists. Did this character fight in any wars? Were they mistreated by a friend? Think on it before you decide on getting a thane.
I've thought of non-lore stuff already, but I'll read all dorf stuff before making a thane.

Dwarves are awesome. Usually, the most despised things are hated because they're more awesome and 20% coolers.
It's a fact dwarves will rule this world soon enough.
And for the lore... Real quick, it's 2nd gen EArthen afflicted by the Curse of Flesh, their history is mostly known around the time of the war of the Three Hammer, when a king died and the weakened three clans (Ironforge/Bronzebeards, southernly Dark Irons, northerly Wildhammers) fought for the throne, resulting in the sundering of the Dwarven realms --- and to the Dark Irons' will to conquer their brothers by cursing the Wildhammer capital and waging war (and destroying Redridge in the first place). Since then dwarves have made good friends with humans and gnomes (the latter bond has become near symbiotic).
